Load shedding is risky business

We're all Business April 08, 2015 By Budget Insurance

When electricity is going on and off on a regular basis, your business could suffer. So, we at Budget have come up with a list of things to keep in mind:

  • Shut down equipment: If you know there’s going to be load shedding, shut off and unplug machinery and electronics. A power surge could seriously damage the equipment your business runs on.

  • Invest in Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS): Decide which circuits in your office require protection, and which don’t really need it. Your most sensitive equipment would include circuits powering servers, PCs, projectors, TVs and your control room.

  • Keep safe on the roads: If you’re on the road for work, make sure you keep an eye out for non-functioning traffic lights and remember to treat them as four-way stops.

  • Remember the office fridge: It may not seem like a top priority, but if the power is going off for a long period of time, the office fridge could cause serious problems. The melting ice from the freezer could cause water damage and rotting food can attract rats, mice, and flies.

Even if you’re really careful, some things are out of your control.

Load shedding affects us all, but some businesses rely heavily on having electricity. If you’re one of these, consider adding Business Interruption cover to your policy. You’ll receive cover if the public supply of electricity, water, gas or telecommunications for your business premises breaks down for 24 hours or more.  What’s more, if storm or fire damage causes a loss in turnover, sales, revenue or income, we’ll keep you covered. This automatically includes:

    • Ventilation failure
    • Auxiliary power failure
    • Booking cancellations
