Holidays at home

House & Home April 10, 2020 By Budget Insurance

We love nothing more than a long weekend and Easter usually means plenty of family time. So what can you do to keep everyone busy? Well, plenty, actually. We’ve rounded up four fun things you can do – and you won’t need to leave home!

1. Fun and games

There are the usual board games that you could consider dusting off. But how about trying out a different kind of gaming with the family?

Is the family into karaoke? Download Smule and turn your smartphone into a mic. Put the lyrics onto your TV screen and have fun belting out your favourite songs.

Heads Up! is another game that’s guaranteed to raise laughs. All you need to do is guess the name of the celeb on your phone – which you hold up with the back against your forehead – before the timer goes off. Your family will give you clues, which may include singing and silly accents. The result? Lots of family fun!

You can also use your Smart TV to download games from Jackbox Games – with so many to choose from, you’ll be entertained for hours. Plus, the best part is that you can play with family or friends who aren’t in the same house as you.

2. Organise a Netflix party

Netflix and chill... Now that sounds like the perfect way to spend a lazy long weekend. But what if we told you it could be even more fun? Two words: Netflix Party. You can hook up with friends and family, near or far (social distancing, people!), and host a long-distance movie night.

First make sure you’re running Netflix through a Chrome browser, then decide what you’re going to watch, hit play and enjoy! Popcorn is optional.

3. Host a virtual party

Just because you can’t celebrate Easter with your family in the same house doesn’t mean you can’t host a virtual party. With the help of Skype, FaceTime and Zoom you can connect with multiple people by hosting a virtual party. Zoom is especially great! It’s functionality allows you to split the screen between yourself and the people you’re chatting with. The free plan on Zoom can accommodate up to 100 participants for up to 40 minutes.

And, if you’d like to do more than just chat, Houseparty, another group video-chatting app, has recently teamed up with Epic, the creator of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, which means you can play virtual games with your family or friends.

4. Go off the beaten track

You really don’t need to leave the house to explore. In fact, it’s possible to have a staycation and still visit far-off (or local) places by taking a virtual tour of famous landmarks. For local experiences, check out Robben Island. Fancy a bit of international travel from your couch? Take a tour of the Louvre Museum in Paris or the Great Wall of China.
