House & Home

As face-to-face activities have taken a back seat due to the pandemic, we’ve been restrained to spend most of our time indoors. Don’t worry though, there are plenty of ways to stay connected with your loved ones and have fun indoors as you adjust to the ‘new normal’.
We’ve compiled some fun activities to do at home to kick-start your indoor adventure.
Use and discover talents
Test out your talents or discover new ones you didn’t know you had with online creative challenges. If you enjoy drawing, you could take part in drawing challenges on Instagram. Type #drawingchallenge in the search bar to find one you’d enjoy. If writing is more your thing, why not try your hand at writing a short story or some poetry? Wattpad allows you to upload stories, and if your story does well, there are publishing opportunities. If you enjoy boogying, TikTok has plenty of dance sequences you can learn. To make it more fun, try out the group options and have a dance party at home!
Play chef
Whether you’re new to cooking or a whizz in the kitchen, making a meal is always fun – and your taste buds will thank you! To get started, check out the Just Cook at Home Facebook group for easy recipes from Fresh Living editor Justine Drake, or let cooking-show host and food editor Siba Mtongana show you how it’s done on her Instagram profile. The great thing about cooking is that it can be a great group activity too. So, round up your family and make fun group meals like pizza, cupcakes and pasta.
Do some DIY projects
Remember that cabinet you’ve been meaning to fix? Or that table that needs a lick of fresh paint? Now is the ideal time to finally get it done, and it’s a perfect way to keep yourself busy. If you live with a partner, your family or roommates, you can make it a group event by splitting up into teams. DIY projects could range from fixing furniture to painting the walls a new colour, or even getting crafty by making new condiment holders. You might not have access to everything you need, so it all depends on the tools (and paints) you have at home. Time to get creative!
Learn something new
When you’ve grown tired of bingeing series on Netflix, keep busy by flexing your brain muscles. Learn a new skill with online courses on sites such as Udemy, Skillshare, Codeacademy and Coursera. If you’ve always wanted to learn a new language, apps such as Duolingo and Memrise offer a fun way to start practising. YouTube also offers endless video content, including tutorials ranging from how to apply makeup to how to build a shelf over your bed or bake rusks.
